I used # 40 mercerized cotton thread. In this case, the size small square is approximately 2,25 x 2,25 inches. But you can make a large square of any size from small squares (the size of a square depends on the number of small squares).

I wrote the instructions for this pattern specifically for tatting with a needle. But you can use the shuttle as well. A graphical diagram and a photo of the process will help you.
