Cro-tatting Lesson 5, or how to dispose of leftover threads of different colors.

I really enjoy reading your comments and questions on my posts. Because in this way you help me to make my blog useful and interesting. The idea of today’s lesson came to me after the publication of one of my old works – a coaster from the remnants of threads. You asked to make a video tutorial on how to make such a coaster. I’m sure many of you have stocks of thread. Well, how can I stop if I see threads of a beautiful color on sale?! And sometimes, for a specific project, I specifically buy threads of a very specific size and color. And in this case, I always buy a little more thread than required. You probably know how disappointing it is if a few meters of thread are not enough to complete the product. Therefore, I have there are ALWAYS leftovers threads! Of course, you can rewind the rest of the thread on smaller spools …

But it still takes up a lot of space.

So, I decided to get rid of the remnants of the thread. To do this, I needed to combine threads of two colors in small coasters.

Note! We add a new thread before the ring or after the ring. In this case, it is very easy to hide both tails on both sides of the ring. And the chain is neat. I did the work with thread of one color until the thread ran out. As you can see, the thread can end anywhere, haha! By the way, I was lucky twice – two coasters turned out to be the same color!

My regular readers know I’m lazy! Haha! Because I don’t like to hide the ends of the threads. Oh, it’s almost as terrible as unraveling the threads in a finished tatting. Why you need a split ring

Firstly, the use of a split ring helps us to move from one row to another WITHOUT cutting the thread. I like to use this trick. In this way, I get much less tails of threads, which have to be hidden with great pain. By the way, you can not hide polyester threads. You can cut them short and melt them with a lighter. But be careful, otherwise you can ruin the product!

Secondly, the split ring helps in creating very original patterns. By the way, the split rings bookmark looks pretty cute, doesn’t it!

First trick

You must try to ensure that all nodes are strong enough. Do you know that you can determine the nature of a person by nodes? Yes, psychologists know many tricks to analyze us! If your nodes are very strong, you have a solid and even somewhat tough character. If you make free knots, then most likely your character is soft and calm. Please write in the comments if your nodes match your character! It is very interesting. Because my nodes even depend on my mood, yes! Oh, I’m a little distracted! So, tatting curl. What you need for a perfect curl. Firstly, try to make your nature very solid at this moment 🙂 The stronger the knots you tie, the better it a curl will hold the form.

Second trick

We start tat with a chain sometimes. Of course, it depends on the pattern. In this case, it is convenient to use a paper clip. But for curl, this does not work absolutely. Oh, I already wrote before that I don’t like to hide the ends of threads. Does any of you love this? How terrible it is: to remove a lot of cut ends, worrying so that they do not come apart. Many tatters come up with how to make this process easier. Beginner tatters master the classical methods. In any case, it was so with me. I have studied many textbooks and videos on the Internet over ten years of my practice of tatting. Of course, there are many interesting and useful master classes for hiding end threads in tatting. But I did not find any material that combines the three methods of tatting: shuttle, needle and hook. My goal is to promote all kinds of tatting. Therefore I hope you will be interested in my experience!

So, a short review of today’s video. I like make large laced items, such as doily, tablecloths, collars, etc. In this case, I will have to “lengthen” the thread several times. And should try to make the snapping of the thread invisible and durable. After all, it is very important from an aesthetic and practical point of view! If I hide both cut ends in one ring or one chain, I get a thickening. (I don’t even consider the option with four threads at once!) Therefore, it is better to tie a new thread at the junction of two or more elements. Example in the photo.

How to choose tools for tatting

How to choose tools for tatting? An important question, isn’t it? But first ask yourself what type of tatting you want to do. Choose shuttle tatting , needle tatting or cro-tatting. If you chose to shuttle, buy 2 pieces to get you started. At first this will be enough for you. Which shuttle is better to choose? I do not know! Each tatters decides for herself what she likes best. But I will share my experience of weaving with different shuttles.

1.Tatting Shuttle

Tatting Shuttle with hook and bobbin is very attractive. They combine a hook and a shuttle. It’s comfortable. Because it takes less time to connect the elements. And you can easily thread wound on the bobbin. But the plastic bobbin break very soon and stop being fixed in the shuttle. The thread unwound and you need to fix the thread with your fingers when tying knots. And hook can break off, alas.

The most popular are plastic shuttles “with spout”. These are my favorite shuttles. They come in different sizes, different colors, different quality of plastic … The choice is diverse! But you must use a crochet hook if you want to achieve a very close connection between the elements. Because the “spout” can stretch a small picot.

Also it is good to use classic shuttles, but with the crochet hook too.

Wooden tatting shuttles. I have cherry wood and golden oak. Very beautiful, light, comfortable. You can buy shuttles from any tree, even exotic ones. Wooden shuttles are more expensive than plastic shuttles, of course. But they are worth it, believe me!

I do not recommend using metal shuttles. They are heavy, the hook is uncomfortable. Very quickly, the latch on the case broke. Not subject to repair. I had to throw it away. Maybe I’m just out of luck?

2. Tatting needle.

If you have chosen the type of tatting with a needle, pay attention to two attributes. First, the needle should not thicken at the end. This will help to make the weave more dense, not stretch the knots. Secondly, the needle should not be sharp so as not to puncture or scratch your fingers.

And in some cases you will have to use a crochet hook to make the perfect connection of the elements. I have never tried wooden needles. But I’ll think about buying them, maybe. And then I will share with you my experience.

3. Cro-tatting.

Tatting hooks are special. Do not try to use ordinary hooks for crocheting. Take a closer look, see the difference?

In my opinion, the most convenient hooks for tatting are Takashimabari hooks.

Tatting little tricks

You already know that I like to use different little tricks for tatting. And today is another tatting little trick for you, my dear readers!

Nobody likes to hide threads after weaving. Is not it? I also do not like! Therefore, I try to leave as few trimmed threads as possible. For example, I made this doily WITHOUT CUTTING THREADS completely. In this case, I used split rings and split chains.

Do you think this is difficult? Not at all! Start by connecting the first and second rows of any doily. Often, patterns begin with one ring. For example, like here:

Three types of tatting

I have been tatting for over ten years and mastered well enough (I think 🙂 three types of tatting! A long time, right? I am happy to share my experience with beginning tatters.

Tatting is a technique for handcrafting a particularly durable lace from a series of knots and loops. There are three types of tatting : shuttle tatting, needle tatting and cro-tatting.

The first type:

Tatting with a shuttle is the earliest method of creating tatted lace. Historically, it was a metal or ivory pointed-oval shape less than 3 inches (76 mm) long, but shuttles come in a variety of shapes and materials. Shuttles often have a point or hook on one end to aid in the joining required in the construction of the lace. This method has a lot of possibilities and tricks. For example, shuttle tatting is good for making jewelry.

The second type:

The second type of the three tatting methods is the needle tatting . Use of the tatting needle became widespread in the 20th century. This method is good for creating large products. In my opinion it is easier to learn and faster. The result is similar to shuttle tatting but is slightly thicker and looser.

The third type:

Cro-tatting combines needle tatting with crochet. The cro-tatting tool is a tatting needle with a crochet hook at the end. In modern patterns, beginning in the early 20th century, the rings are tatted and the arches or chains are crocheted. Many people consider cro-tatting more difficult than crochet or needle tatting.
Cro-tatting is popular in Japan.
