Cherbourg umbrellas, or Sha-ba-da-ba-da

The photo shows a beige heart-shaped sachet with embroidery and hand-tatting lace. A bouquet of lavender lies nearby. The heart and lavender are two delicate symbols of love and France, illustrating the article "Cherbourg Umbrellas" by FairyLavefromElena.

Cherbourg umbrellas, or Sha-ba-da-ba-da.

Hello everyone!

I told you in a previous post how much I love listening to music. It helps me create lace. Or other handmade items. You can read my post and watch a short video for a good mood: https://fairylace.kozinenko.com/2020/08/15/lace-and-music/

But there are many more things that inspire me. Long live the Internet! I can draw inspiration from my friends. I want to clarify. In no case am I using other people’s things for repetition. This violates copyright, of course. But I love to look at beautiful things, because new beautiful ideas are born in my head. I hope you understand me.

For example, these cute earrings from my friend and talented jewelry designer Polina Rofman.

Of course, these earrings have already found their lucky customer. But you can see (and I’m sure you will want to buy) other Polina items: https://www.etsy.com/shop/lyrisgems?ref=ss_profile

When I saw these small clouds with raindrops and thoughts rushed through my head without stopping. Ha! I can write a long novel for you about how my brains work. But I won’t bore you with details. I don’t really like walking wet in the rain (do you love that?). So I immediately thought of an umbrella. Then, when I say the word umbrella, I immediately remember the beautiful movie . I really love watching old movies. One of them is the Cherbourg umbrellas. Such a sweet and touching love story. And what a genius music! This music sounded in my head when I created this pattern.

Sherbourg Umbrellas, or Sha-ba-da-ba-da

I created this pattern specifically for tatting with a needle. It seems to me that the tatting needles resemble the needles of an umbrella too. That’s the name for my new doily – Сherbourg umbrellas.

By the way, you can make this doily of any color, like multi-colored umbrellas. I’m sure you will like it. Try it! https://fairylace.kozinenko.com/product-category/patterns-tutorials/patterns-and-tutorials/

And of course, share your comments and subscribe to my blog. Welcome!

Lace and music

Old piano sheet music with yellowed pages, inspiring lace creations by FairyLacefromElena

Lace and music. My favorite music.

Hello everyone!

I have a very short post today. I wanted to share a wonderful mood with you. By the way, do you remember that I am creating a collection of Summer Mood patterns? Check which patterns have already been completed: https://fairylace.kozinenko.com/product-category/patterns-tutorials/patterns-and-tutorials/

I have a wonderful craft room. And it’s not always a complete mess there 🙂 Remember? I shared with you what is going on around me when I create sewing projects. Fortunately, tatting doesn’t require a lot of space, a lot of materials, and doesn’t create a lot of clutter. Do you agree?

We have a very large music library. But our sons say that this is not relevant, alas. In the age of fast internet, you shouldn’t collect discs. Because we can listen to any music directly from the Internet. But to me it is like reading paper books. A special smell, rustling of pages, a beautiful cover. How can you compare this with a book on your phone?

I put a few music CDs for myself in the workshop. This is my favorite music: jazz, rock, soul, and of course classical music.

Lace and music
Lace and music

I am a musician. Therefore I understand and love classical music ( I think!). And today I listen to Mozart with pleasure. Divine music!

I want to share with you my mood, lace and music. So, one minute of video, welcome. And come back to answer a few questions, please. https://youtu.be/7PTRzbOJEfc

So, I invite you to answer a few questions:

Do you like listening to music when you tatting or doing other handicrafts? Or do you like working in silence?
Which music do you like?
Do you have a craft room? Or at least a small corner where you can be creative?

Take care of yourself!

What to do at home

A soft handmade cat toy sewn from plaid fabric, created with love as a gift for a granddaughter — by FairyLacefromElena.

What to do at home. Or what kinds of handicrafts can you do?

Hello everyone!

I haven’t written an article on my blog for a long time. Some bloggers try to do this every day! But I will not bore you with my constant “presence”! Moreover, I have so little time to create content, alas.

First of all, I create tatting patterns. And I really love doing projects of other tatting masters. I like intricate and original patterns.

Secondly, I love sewing. I sew clothes for my family. This is one of my works.

These are dresses and denim bags for my daughter-in-law and eldest granddaughter.

Thirdly, I love to sew quilts with embroidery. And I make blocks in the hoop on an embroidery computer. This is an exciting activity! Because I like coming up with designs and creating compositions.

Do you like my big embroidered patchwork quilt?

This photo clearly shows the embroidered elements.

I also like to do macrame, knitting, crocheting, luma weaving, kumihimo. I have not forgotten anything? Also string-art.

But I do my drawings without nails. I do this on recycle DVD discs.

Oh, what a mess it is in my workshop when I sew or embroider.

Let’s call this a creative mess. Ha ha!

But in any case, I always keep one special place in my workshop in order. This is my “tatting corner”.

I pamper my back with this soft sofa.

This is my new doily from the Summer Mood collection. As usual, I need some time to describe and draw this in a computer program. But I will try to do it soon. Until then, you can check my patterns. Perhaps you will find a fairly interesting pattern for yourself. https://fairylace.kozinenko.com/product-category/patterns-tutorials/patterns-and-tutorials/

Write in the comments what types of needlework you are doing. Perhaps you are not limited to just tatting. Because now the question is especially acute: What to do at home. 😀

Name like song

White lace doily "Mr. Sun, Mr. Moon" displayed on a black background with an orange flower and green leaves adding a sunny accent — from FairyLacefromElena.

Name like song or Interesting facts about the song “Mr. Sun , Mr. Moon”.

Hello everyone!

My work on the Summer Mood collection continues. I finished third doily. You can buy PDF instruction and video tutorial here: https://fairylace.kozinenko.com/product/mr-sun-mr-moon-pattern/

Oh, where can I get a name for my creation? I like the rays radiating from the center of the doily. It looks very much like a warm summer sun. But in the center is the real moon. The middle is perfectly round. How to combine the sun and the moon in one name? And then I found a very interesting article on the Internet.

“Mr. Sun, Mr. Moon” is a song by the American rock band Paul Revere & the Raiders written by Mark Lindsay. This song originally released as a single in 1969. Then on the album Hard ‘N’ Heavy (with Marshmallow) later that year. The song peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 15 on the Cash Box Top 100 Singles chart, and at number 8 on the RPM Top Singles chart.
The song was ranked by both Billboard and RPM as the number 95 song of 1969 on their year-end charts. Also the song was featured on the soundtrack album to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. By the way, my husband and I recently watched this film by Quentin Tarantino. The ingenious play of actors Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio!

But listen to the words of the song:

Life is bringing you so down

You don’t think you can make it

Every night is a show down

Every day is just fake it

Let me show you a new place

If you follow directions

You’ll be wearing a new face

Add it to your collection.

How this is in tune with our environment. The unreality of life due to quarantine. Everything has changed and will not be the same, it seems. But don’t be discouraged! I invite everyone to immerse themselves in creativity. And yes, with my new pattern You’ll be wearing a new face (sorry, new doily) add it to your collection!

By the way, let me remind you that you can watch a video on how to connect a chain to a long picot on my YouTube channel. Welcome! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWPPlAbps5I

So, the name like song for my new doily is fine. Do you agree? Write in the comments, ask questions. Subscribe to my blog. And don’t forget to visit my store: https://fairylace.kozinenko.com/

Summer mood

Close-up of a delicate water lily resembling a lotus, photographed in summer at Vorontsov Palace park — by FairyLacefromElena.

Summer mood, or how I decided to create a series of doilies called “Summer mood”.

Hello everyone!

Today is the middle of summer! Wow, I can’t believe it. Perhaps the rains and hurricanes prevented me from believing that summer had come. But let’s not talk about sad things. I want to show which roses bloomed in my garden. Yes, I have different flowers. So, each season has its own flowers. But now is the time for roses, isn’t it? Delicate yellow roses create a wonderful summer mood.

And these roses look like the sun. I regret that you cannot smell their aroma!

I thought, why don’t I take pictures of these flowers against a snow-white doily. But I need a very-very delicate doily. I want to emphasize the grace and beauty of a rose.

Tatting doily ” La Rosa dei Venti”.

I got a good photo (I think so). Do you agree with me? The pattern and detailed video can be bought here:https://fairylace.kozinenko.com/product/la-rosa-dei-venti/

This name translates from Italian as ” Wind Rose”. I know that this symbol indicates the direction of the winds. But this symbol still looks like a rose. No wonder such a name. In addition, I really like the sound in Italian.

But what about the other flowers? Maybe I’ll try to create some doilies in this style. And with the help of photos I will combine these doilies into one collection. By the way, I’m thinking about a pleasant surprise for my subscribers. But I’ll tell about this when the collection is ready. Now I made two doilies in this style. But I need to choose the right flower for the “Mandala” doily. What flower do you think? I have light purple bells in my garden. I’ll try. Perhaps it will turn out beautifully. If you do not remember my doily “Mandala” , check here, please: https://fairylace.kozinenko.com/product/tatting-pattern-doily-mandala/

Of course, I will be glad to your comments. Tell us which flowers you like. How is the weather in your city this summer? And be sure to express your opinion on whether I should create such a collection. Or are two doilies with long picot enough?

Also you can watch the video and subscribe to my YouTube channel, welcome: https://youtu.be/qWPPlAbps5I

New week new project

A central lace motif inspired by bobbin lace and reimagined in tatting, a new project by FairyLacefromElena

New week new project.

Hello everyone! On June 17, my competition for the best name for tatting doily ended. Ah, how many beautiful names, how many kind words I received! It’s amazing! I am extraordinarily inspired. And after a wonderful weekend (I hope your weekend was also good!) I start my new week with a new project.

I decided to use an interesting technique for the center of this doily. It looks like bobbin lace, doesn’t it?

New week new project
New week new project

I want to call this doily “Wheel of Time”. Because the alternation of dense and airy rows reminds me of the running of time in our lives. I think each of you has come across “long” days when time goes on endlessly. And I know there are so “swift” days that fly by like an instant. This is the wheel of time that moves without stopping, then slowing down, then accelerating. Zoe Carbajales came up with this name. I hope she will not mind using this name for my new project.

Previous option

So, I did this project 7 years ago. And the previous version of this template looked like this.

Grey mandala doily

Now I decided to slightly change the general appearance, changed the color and thickness of the threads. I’m very interested in your opinion on the title. Therefore write in the comments, please. Is the “Wheel of Time” suitable for this doily?

By the way, pay attention to the personalized shuttle that I use. Do you want one for yourself? Check out my store, please: https://fairylace.kozinenko.com/product-category/patterns-tutorials/tatting-tools/

You can also watch a video on my YouTube channel, welcome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0zrZP-a6dQ&list=UU3dn4_9pp7tIKA2k564wLBQ

So, I will try to finish the pattern at the end of the week. Anyway, I will try! But after tat, I will need to draw a graphical diagram in a computer program, write instructions and mount a video tutorial. Yes, I plan to add a video to this manual. Do you think the video helps a lot? Or is it a waste of time? Oh, I’m talking about time again! Write your opinions in the comments.

What am I doing in quarantine

What am I doing in quarantine

What am I doing in quarantine.

Hello everyone! I hope all my readers and subscribers are healthy too. Take care of yourself! Stay at home!

So, we cannot make a difference. But we must change our attitude towards this situation. Let’s look at our “house arrest” in a positive way. Look, how many positive points I have identified for myself! Firstly, I chatting with my family every minute of every day. This is real happiness! Secondly, I teach my angel, my granddaughter to weave lace. Thirdly, we follow fashion. Fourth, I can not rush anywhere. So, first things first. 🙂

I am proud of my granddaughter. She is very talented. Maria made this bookmark for her math textbook in 4 days. Do you remember that my granddaughter is only 7 years old? And I just recently showed her how to make a tatting needle. This is phenomenal, isn’t it?

And I am gradually coming to the end of my new project. Because tatting is my passion. And my motto: not a day without lace! Of course, Mary does not leave our quiet corner. But I sewing a mask for her too. This is very relevant now. So that’s fashionable. (Do you remember that we are only looking for positive points?)

I told what am I doing in quarantine. What are you doing? Write in the comments how quarantine affects your life, please. Can you find a positive?

Do you like this hair clip? You can easily and quickly make this beautiful 3D bow. Welcome!https://fairylace.kozinenko.com/product/tatting-pattern-3d-bow/

Tatting in resin part 3

Seven colorful polyester thread balls for tatting lace, each 50g, placed in a rainbow semicircle, part of Tatting in resin tutorial series by FairyLacefromElena.

Tatting in resin, part 3.

Hello everyone!

I am got a lot of chagrin and disappointment, alas …My previous post gained few views and comments. Are you not interested? In this case, my efforts make no sense. Why am I wasting time and effort describing my experience with tatting resin? I know how to make tatting in resin. 🙁 I thought you would be interested in this topic. Because after starting publications on this topic I received a lot of views, reviews and suggestions from visitors to my blog. Sorry, but I have to appeal to all readers again. Subscribe to my blog and leave comments, please. Of course, only if you are interested! 🙂 Because without feedback my blog does not make sense. Sorry for the emotions …

So, “Tatting in Resin, Part 3”. Today I will talk about the threads that I use.

In previous posts, I wrote how difficult the thread selection process was. Because the thickness of the thread is very important for the size of the finished sample tatting. I determined that the most suitable threads are thickness # 50 (for my projects, of course).

I chose two types of thread: cotton and polyester.

Cotton threads

Most I like to weave thin cotton threads. These threads are made straight, tightly twisted. I tat very small pieces, therefore quite difficult to hide the end threads. But it is enough to make a strong knot and shortly cut the end treads. I made sure, that in this case the knot does not untie and tatted piece not deteriorate. By the way, I noticed an interesting effect! I get a brighter shade of thread when I put a piece of tatting in resin.

Tatting in resin

Polyester threads

But I want to say that polyester threads are also good. The more that I found surprisingly gentle pastel shades of different colors. Do you see how these threads glisten in resin? I am sure you will like these pastel colors.

And I was convinced, that the shade of threads is brighter in the resin. I think this is a consequence of the refraction of rays in a transparent resin. But I will not bore you with the study of physics and optics!

I checked, for polyester yarns it’s not enough to knit and trim the end. I had to slightly melt the ends of the thread with fire. Yes, it works! But I got a little problem. You must be very careful with a white thread. 🙂 Because with arson the themes darken.

I got unpleasant yellow spots on white threads. And oh horror! They spread in the resin, like ink stains. I was forced to throw it away.

In any case, now I try to be careful when working with new threads! First I make trial samples. And of course, I “try on” each woven piece into molds.

Oh, I do not want to tell how many times I changed the pattern for “Rose Garden Alphabet”! But the final result was suitable!

You can buy this pattern and make a small personalized keychain. https://fairylace.kozinenko.com/product/rose-garden-alphabet-tatting-pattern/

And finally, I want to show part of my “theme collection”. Oh yes, I’m not a threads holic, I’m a thread collector! haha

Tatting in resin

tatting in resin, handmade jewelry set

Tatting in resin. What is it? Perhaps I do not know the terminology very well. But the essence of the process is very accurately conveyed by these words: tatting lace frozen in resin.

Of course, fans of tatting for sure know the history of this beautiful kind of needlework. Some historians believe that the tatting technique originated in eastern countries in the 14th century! So over the years, tatting has undergone many changes and improvements. I already wrote about this in my blog. Nowadays, the art of tatting gets a new life. And this is very good! Do you agree with me?

Unfortunately, often we see antique tatting items in a deplorable state. So tatting is made of thread. The threads were not always of very high quality, I think. Alas, the threads are not very durable material. And the threads require careful care. But how to keep lace for long, long time in perfect condition? I decided to combine the old tatting technique with modern synthetic material – epoxy resin.

Oh, I had to do a lot of experiments! I messed up 1/2 liter of resin! I threw out more than 30 fragments of lace! If you are interested in how I achieved acceptable results, please write in the comments. I will make a series of articles on the topic of “tatting in resin” and share my experience without fail. The main difficulty when working with lace and resin is to achieve transparency of the resin and make very small pieces of lace. If we use big lace pieces, we need big molds. Therefore, the finished product will be bulky. Is not it? I made some patterns for little keychains. For example, “Rose Garden Alphabet.” Each letter is no larger than 1 inch. You can see this alphabet here: https://fairylace.kozinenko.com/product/rose-garden-alphabet-tatting-pattern/

Lace collars for the dress

Apricot tatting lace collar with white beads on grey dress by FairyLacefromElena

Lace collars for the dress. Yes, as the name suggests, today I want to talk … about time! What is the relationship between time and collars? Ah, these are my associations! Perhaps you will agree with me. But read my post to the end, please! If you like it, subscribe and leave comments. Philosophical thoughts are welcome! 🙂

At first – about the collars. I found a very interesting and instructive article on this topic:

Collar (clothing)

In clothing, a collar is the part of a shirt, dress, coat or blouse that fastens around or frames the neck. Among clothing construction professionals, a collar is differentiated from other necklines such as revers and lapels, by being made from a separate piece of fabric, rather than a folded or cut part of the same piece of fabric used for the main body of the garment. A collar may be permanently attached to the main body of the garment (e.g. by stitching) or detachable.

You can read this Wikipedia article. Many different types of collars, many illustrations. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collar_(clothing)

There are also lace collars. Ah, gentle, delicate handmade lace! Great lace collars were worn in the second quarter of the 17th century, and also a little later, in the Victorian era.

But everything in history repeats itself. In fashion history, too, of course! And at the beginning of the 21st century, we are pleased to wear what our ancestors liked so much! Including large lace collars for the dress.

Tatting lace collars for the dress
Tatting lace collars for the dress

How fleeting is the time! We are always in a hurry, afraid to be late. How expensive is every minute of our lives! I am mentally immersed in the atmosphere of antiquity when I create my lace collars. This is a “time travel” ritual. For me, anyway. And time stops! I forget about food and water when I immerse myself in the magical world of lace. I stop following the flow of time around me. 🙂 And then comes the wonderful moment of completion. Now the lace collar is ready to meet with the usual dress. This meeting always creates the perfect outfit!

So, take a few minutes of your time and watch a short video, please! I supplemented this slide show with the magnificent music of Mozart. Hope this creates a suitable atmosphere! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbPXyJwRHFw

Happy tatting!
